Common name: Silver maple, soft maple.

Brief description: A medium-sized to large monoecious tree; the light gray bark separating in large plates. Leaves are simple, opposite, palmately veined, deeply palmately 5-lobed, the lobes with a few sharp teeth or minor lobes.   Flowers are greenish yellow or reddish, each cluster usually unisexual; opening in earliest spring on lateral buds. Fruits are are a double samara with one-seeded winged mericarp, falling before the leaves are fully grown. 

Campus data:  Rare on campus. One large cultivated individual encountered.
