Common name: Sugar maple, hard maple.

Brief description: A medium-sized to large tree. Leaves are opposite, simple, flat, palmately veined, (3)5-lobed, glabrous beneath except for the vein axils; the lobes with a few large sharp teeth. Flowers are perfect, in umbels from the terminals or uppermost axillary buds. Fruits are a glabrous double samara with one-seeded winged mericarp, the wings divergent at an angle of 120o or less. 

Campus data: Very frequently cultivated, and also infrequent in the wild on campus. More than thirty individuals encountered.
