Common name: Carolina all-spice, strawberry bush (generic).

Brief description: An aromatic shrub 1 to 3 m tall. Leaves are simple, opposite, ovate to elliptic, entire, with entire margins, pinnately veined, scarcely hairy beneath to glabrous. Flowers are solitary, perfect, with a numerous perianth and a hypanthium, aromatic. Fruits are enclosed in the enlarged hypanthium (the calyx-tube). 

Campus data: Occurs very rarely on campus. Cultivated in a couple of places. Has been encountered in the wild rarely.  Less than 5 occurrences on campus.
