Brief description: A large, monoecious tree with smooth gray bark. Leaves are ovate to oblong-obovate, simple, alternate, entire, pinnately veined, silky beneath, margins serrate-toothed to denticulate. Flowers are unisexual, the staminate occurring on lower lateral buds, the pistillate (three-locular ovary) -- on upper ones. Fruits are a sharp three-angled nut. 

Campus data: Abundant everywhere in the wild, not cultivated. Mature trees are usually very large.
