Common name: Sweet gum.

Brief description: A big, monoecious tree; smaller branches may have corky wings. Leaves are long-petioled, simple, alternate, deeply palmately 5-lobed, palmately veined,  margins finely serrate-toothed. Flowers are unisexual, in dense heads, the mature pistillate heads brown, very hard and persistent, including the styles . Fruits are capsular, each ovary with 1-2 seeds. 

Campus data: Abundant everywhere in the wild, not cultivated. Mature trees are usually very large.
