Common name: Common elder.

Brief description: A shrub to 3 m, forming thickets and having a large white pith. Leaves are odd-pinnately compound, opposite; leaflets are 5-11, usually 7, lanceolate to ovate, entire, pinnately veined, glabrous to more often hairy beneath, margins sharply serrate. Flowers are perfect, white,  in large terminal cymes; the cyme 5-rayed flat to convex. Fruits are a purple-black, edible, berry-like. 

Campus data: Very rare in the wild on campus. One shrub encountered.
