ENVIRONMENTAL SUCCESS STORIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND

(2008-02) Recycling: Do those recycling bins really work? Is recycling viable? In a word - yes. In 2006 the University recycled or diverted 1,071,672 pounds (approximately 486 metric tons) from the landfill. We recycled 132,400 pounds of mixed paper, 210,800 pounds of cardboard, and 27,200 pounds of mixed drink containers. [Spiderbytes January 2008]

(2008-04) Trees: Did you know that an average tree consumes approximately 3/4ths of a ton to one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime? Or that the University's landscaping staff plants between 140 and 160 native trees on the campus each year? In an average year our tree planting efforts commit to consuming an additional 150 tons of carbon dioxide emissions (equivalent to driving your automobile 330,000 miles), as well as generating the oxygen needed to support approximately 300 people each year.  [Spiderbyte 8490 February 2008]
