Learners

Intended Audience

This lesson is anchored in fifth grade literature and language arts and involves art to an extent. The lesson can easily be modified for grades three and four, as well as secondary English students.

Prior Knowledge

Prior to starting the web quest, students need to be familiar with traditional fairy tales. If time allows, take some time each day to read some tales to students to get them thinking about this literature. Students should have basic knowledge of writing techniques. This lesson should be used towards the end of the year after students have developed these skills.

Adaptations

Gifted: The lesson is self-pacing for students. Gifted individuals may assist other group members if they complete their process early.

Diversity: The lesson allows students to use their creative talents to re-create the fairy tales. Students may wish to write stories in a Hispanic or Asian context, or include characters with physical disabilities. Students are encouraged to explore these options.

ESL: The lesson is not translated for Spanish-speaking students. Therefore, depending on their proficiency level, they may need some coaching throughout their process.
