Introduction
This lesson was designed for Education 343 Technology in Education at the University of Richmond. For other examples of lessons by University of Richmond Education students visit the the student projects page.
The topic of this lesson is the debate between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois over the education of African-Americans. The students will be asked to analyze primary source documents and reach their own conclusions about how these men should be remembered. The students will be asked to design a mural which illustrates the goals and visions of these two men.
Entry Level Skills and Knowledge
This lesson should take place after the students have covered the Reconstruction period. It is also helpful if you have discussed Plessy v. Ferguson and the Rise of Jim Crow laws.
A novice teacher could complete this lesson, there are no special skills required. Feel free to ask for help, however, if you have questions about using the internet, assessing the murals, etc.
