The Process

Get into groups of four and complete the following steps:

Step 1: Background Information

The following sites will provide you with general information on the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Look at each of them carefully. Some of the sites may include words that you don't understand. That is okay! Use this dictionary to find the definitions of any words that you are not familiar with.

World Book Online (you will need to register AND search for the Lost Colony of Roanoke)

The Lost Colony of Roanoke: A Mystery in History
--A good starting point with LOTS of background information.

Search for the Lost Colony--More facts about the Roanoke Colony.

Extending the story:
For this section of the quest, you all have the same job. You must come together and discuss the theories. All four of you need to come to a consensus, or general agreement, about which theory you think is most likely. To reach the consensus, the entire group will have to participate. Every person's input is important. It is okay and healthy to disagree, but please be flexible in your opinion.
Once you have decided on a theory as a group, you need to finish the newspaper article that we started with. We gave you the headline:

"Entire Community Disappears!"

Now, you have to finish the story. Write an article explaining what happened to the colonists as though it had just happened. Include as much specific information as possible. Be sure that each of you participates in this process equally because all of your inputs are important. Also, each person should draw a picture that could go in the newspaper with the article. When you are finished, take the article and pictures along with the tape of the show to your teacher. Then go to the conclusion page.
