Introduction

Poetry is everywhere you look. It is in advertisements, song lyrics and T.V. theme songs. Poetry can spark ideas, describe events, tell stories, stir emotions, and even make you laugh! The topic, style, and appearance of any poem are completely up to the writer. While many differences exist between poetry and music, the symbolism, emotion, structure, and story-like nature of poetry are often similar to the lyrics of music to which you listen.

You have heard that your favorite band is about to release a new album; however, they are struggling with material for their last single.  The band created a contest for its fan club, asking fans to submit poems and song lyrics that could potentially be used for a verse on the album. Let your creative juices flow during this WebQuest as you research free verse, syllabic, and rhymed/metered poetry, practicing each in hopes of writing the lyrics to your favorite bands next hit song.
