Publications Expert

Task:
    1. Your group has acquired an ample amount of literature. However, what do you plan on doing with all of this information? It needs to reach the public-- and that is your job. In order for students and teachers to benefit from your textbook, the information must be presented in a clear and accessible way. You need to assemble and organize the book, as if you were going to send it to a publisher for publication.
    2. Formulate a Table of Contents and a Title page for the textbook.
    3. Decide how to arrange the literature, the artwork, the questions, the "mini glossaries," and the "Optional Activities." Example: Do you want the "mini glossaries" to appear before or after the literary selection.
    4. The format should ideally be presented in a concrete, cut-and-pasted paper form-- something tangible.
    5. You are also responsible for starting to spread the word about this fabulous new book. Write a "Publications Statement" which presents the beneficial resources in your textbook. This statement is intended to serve as an advertisement. If it were to be published in Education magazines and newspapers, it must attract the eye of the teachers reading the advertisement-- make them want to purchase this product. Sell your textbook!

    Resources:

    1. The British and Irish Authors on the Web page contains an index of a variety of on-line texts. If you are planning to format the textbook using a computer, having the texts available on-line will be most beneficial-- and this site will be most helpful.
    2. The Pearson Custom Publishing website provides a great deal of information about guidelines for publishing academic textbooks, such as information on the table of contents, numbering, and formatting.
    3. The Prentice Hall Website contains the text for a British Literature Textbook on-line. This site is directed toward student use.
    4. Off-line Resources available at the University of Richmond Library:
      1. Textbooks and Schooling in the U.S., Ed. by David Elliot
      2. Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Education, by David Cabell
      3. Resources for Writing for Publication in Education, by Sidney B. Katz
