The Process

Now that you know a little about what you will be doing, here is the process you must go through to write your story.

1. Your teacher will split you into groups of four.

2. Your teacher will let you pick the perspective you would like to write from. You can write from the point of view of John, Jennie, the baby, or the wallpaper/house.

3. Once your group has determined the perspective that you will write from it is time to do a little research and artistic reconstruction. You now need to decide (or your teacher will decide) the roles in which each of you will contribute to this project. The roles are as follows:

Biographer:

It is the biographer's task to research the short story's author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This research will include information about her family life, her interests and the important events that shaped her as a writer.
Historian:  The historian is responsible for researching and outlining certain facts that surround time period in which this story takes place. Specific details like scientific discoveries and statistics should be uncovered and correlated to the story.
Reporter:  The reporter is concerned with the important social issues that surround the story. Issues like woman's rights, medical philosophies and family values should be investigated.
Actor:  The actor's job is to fully investigate the point of view of the character that the group has chosen to write from. This includes the clues given in the text, background information on his/her station in life, and how the character will be incorporated into the story.

4. Roles chosen? Now it is time to start. The following pages will take you to a page with questions about your character to keep in mind while you work. That page will then lead you to worksheets to fill out according to the role that you have chosen. The worksheets are an essential part of this project and of your grade so be neat and accurate. Once you have finished the worksheets you will return to this page.

5. Now it is time for you to take the information you have gathered and write your story.

-First you should get together as a group and share the information that you have gathered from the web. How will all of these facts and issues be worked into your story?

- After you have consulted your group members you should then form an outline detailing where you are going to put relevant information into your story.

- Then you should match your outline with the original The Yellow Wallpaper to make sure there are no inconsitancies.

- Lastly you should write your story as a group. Your teacher will give you several days to do this and you should make sure that all of your hard work is desplayed within the story.
