Stories Portraying Cultural Conflict

All the colors of the race
are
in my face, and just behind my face:
behind my eyes:
inside my head.
And inside my head, I give my self a place
at the end of a long
line
forming it self into a circle.
And I am holding out my hands.

Throughout history, racial groups have been in conflict with one another. It is very important for children to understand the reasons for these conflicts and the feelings behind them. "Learning about other cultural experiences makes each of us a more sensitive, more knowledgeable, and more valuable member of society. Literature can be an important ally in accomplishing this goal" (Leu & Kinzer, 1995, p. 142). There are many wonderful pieces of literature that will help children learn more about the conflicts that have occured.

The following books deal with many different cultural conflicts. Teachers are encouraged to use these books in as many ways possible to help children learn more about cultural history. Please, feel free to expand on any ideas and use them in any way possible.
