Degrees Aren't Just for Temperature...

Dr. Globe

The lines of latitude and longitude are measured in degrees.
Degrees are measurements of the distance away from the equator or Prime Meridian.

For example, for latitude, one line above the equator is 10 degrees North and one line below the equator is 10 degrees South. The lines increase by 10 degrees each time you move one line closer to the north or south poles.

For longitude, one line to the left of the Prime Meridian is 10 degrees West and one line to the right of the Prime Meridian is 10 degrees East.

So... the locations of places are given in degrees of latitude and longitude.
For example, Washington, D. C. is 38 degrees North and 77 degrees West.
