Tree; young trunks brown with corky prickles that persist on the bark of mature trees; leaves alternate, palmately compound; leaflets 5 to 7, glabrous; flowers 15-23 cm long; calyx 3.5 cm long, tubular; petals yellow, finely pubescent on the external surface; fruit an elongate cylindrical capsule; seeds embedded among silky fibers (kapok).
