Croton arboreus Millsp.

Shrubs or small trees; pubescence of scales; leaves alternate, simple, ovate-cordate, often complexly convoluted (blade-petiole junction angled downward, primary vein curved downward in its apical course, the margins upturned), turning orange in senescence; infloreescences spike-like, from the upper nodes, pistillate flowers towards the base, staminate flowers towards the apex; staminate flowers pale; ovaries and fruits covered with cylindrical protuberances.

Evidently closely related to Croton reflexifolius Kunth, to which Yucatan material of this species has sometimes been referred.
