Woody liana; stems 4-angled, hollow in cross-section; leaves opposite, compound, 2-3 foliolate; leaflet margins entire, base cordate; pseudostipules broad, foliaceous; flowers bilaterally symmetrical, tubular, with 5 lobes, purple, with much white at the throat; fruits elongate, flat, smooth-surfaced.
