Shrub;
leaves opposite, simple, fragrant, ovate, base truncate to rounded,
margin toothed, apex acute, surface wrinkled; inflorescence a
pedicellate cluster of sessile flowers; corolla changing color
with age (yellow becoming orange common in wild/naturalized plants,
other colors found in cultivation); drupe fruits black, borne
in dense clusters.

Standley (1930) reports that the plant is reputed to have stimulant and tonic properties, being used to treat intestinal and throat problems.
