Terrestrial
cactus; stem jointed, forming pad-like segments; spine clusters
(areoles) somewhat elevated, each bearing one to several spines
or sometimes spines absent; flowers with conspicuous deep pink
to red tepals and stamens atop the green ovary; ovary/fruit widest
towards the concave apex (more or less obcylindric).
