Arborescent palm; leaves costapalmate; inflorescence borne among the leaf crown, much-branched; flowers are bisexual; fruits fleshy, edible.

Fruit extracts are administered as sedative and to stimulate the appetite (Standley 1930; Morton 1981). The leaves are widely used for thatch. Listed as an important source of pollen and/or nectar for bees (Souza Novello 1981, Suarez Molina 1981).
