Herbs, perhaps somewhat woody at the base, sometimes verging toward a scrambling lianous habit; leaves alternate, simple, lanceolate, base slightly cordate, margin toothed, apex acute; inflorescence axillary, pistillate flowers and fruits proximal at base of inflorescence), staminate flowers distal (towards the apex); flowers minute; fruit a hairy capsule. CAUTION: all aerial parts are beset with stinging hairs.
