Common name: Red maple.

Brief description: A medium-sized to large functionally monoecious tree; the young twigs are red. Leaves are sharply but shallowly lobed, simple, opposite, palmately veined, coarsely double serrate or with a few minor lobes. Flowers are unisexual, in fascicles on lateral buds, opening much before the leaves. Fruits are are a double reddish samara with one-seeded winged mericarp, the wings not spreading much; fruits maturing in spring. 

Campus data: Abundant everywhere in the wild, and often cultivated.
