Brief description: A nearly dioecious small tree with cross-checked bark. Leaves are oval or oblong, simple, alternate, pinnately veined, entire, margins entire. Flowers are unisexual, greenish-yellow, the staminate solitary or 2-3 together, the pistillate solitary with 8 sterile anthers; ovary is 8-locellar. Fruits are an edible yellowish-brown berry. 

Campus data: Very rare on campus. The two encountered specimens are along Westhampton creek, before and after the lake.
