Common name: Japanese holly.

Brief description: An evergreen, polygamo-dioecious shrub to a small tree to 6 m. Leaves are leathery, thick, glabrous, shining, oval to obovate or oblong-lanceolate, small, simple, alternate, entire, pinnately veined, margins finely crenate-serrate. Flowers are mostly unisexual, white, the pistillate solitary on this year's growth. Fruits are a black-red drupe.
