Brief description: An evergreen, dioecious or polygamo-dioecious shrub to 6 m.  Leaves are oval to elliptic-oblong, simple, opposite, dark green and very glossy above,  with 2-4 large spiny teeth on each side or infrequently entire. Juvenile and adult foliage is heteromorphic.  Flowers are unisexual or perfect, white, fragrant, on slender pedicels, flowering in June-July. Fruits are a long, bluish, ovoid drupe. The picture on the left is from early May, showing previous year's fruits.

Campus data: Occasionally cultivated on campus. Several patches encountered.
