Common name: Common cherry-laurel.

Brief description: A highly variable, evergreen bush to a small tree; the bark is has characteristic horizontal lenticels. Leaves are variable, oblong, simple, alternate, entire, margins remotely small-toothed. The distal end of the petiole may have small glands.  Flowers are perfect, in slender racemes. Fruits are a 1-seeded, conic, pointed, black purple drupe with fleshy exocarp and hard endocarp (stone). 

Campus data: Commonly cultivated on campus. Shrub and trimmed forms are also common.
