Aphelandra scabra (Vahl) Sm. (syn: Aphelandra deppeana Schlecht. & Cham.)

Understory shrub; leaves simple, opposite, with wedge-like (cuneate) base, widest above the middle; flowers in densely bracted spikes; corollas bright red, tubular, 2-lipped; anthers and stigmas protrude from corolla tube; fruits ovate capsules.
