Woody liana; leaves opposite, compound, with 2 or 3 leaflets; leaflets ovate or rounded-ovate, base often cordate, often with scale-like hairs; flowers white; fruit a woody capsule with rough surface.

Listed as an important source of pollen and/or nectar for bees (Souza Novello 1981). According to regional folklore, a ghostly yet beautiful woman called Xtabay appears in isolated settlements, combing her hair with the rough-surfaced fruits of this liana.
